This beautiful AAA Four Diamond Hotel is right on Lake Mendota and just a few minutes’ walk to Madison’s gorgeous State Capitol building and its Saturday farmers’ market. It’s an ideal place to stay to explore Madison’s local food scene, Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, local sports, and an exceptional array of activities for the young and young at heart.
The Edgewater is a member of Historic Hotels of America. It first opened in 1948 and has hosted celebrities like Elvis, Bob Hope, Bob Marley and the Dalai Lama. Its original Arte Moderne building now holds a large spa, two fitness centres, a small pool, meeting space, and some guest rooms, including longer-stay suites. Most guests stay in the newer main building, ingeniously constructed to be eight stories from the street and 15 stories from the water (the lobby is on the sixth floor). Both buildings have rooftop patios and gorgeous views of the lake. A $110-million renovation was completed in 2014.
The Edgewater prides itself on offering programming for the local community, much of it free. Friday nights often have live music, accompanied by a traditional Wisconsin fish fry. Other activities on the vast deck connecting the hotel’s two buildings include yoga classes, cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers, and winter skating on a specially-constructed outdoor ice rink. There are multiple dining options within the hotel, and it’s a short walk to local restaurants.
Many of The Edgewater’s 202 rooms and suites offer lake views, and feature all the amenities you’d expect in a Four Diamond hotel. My suite had a large shower room separate from the immense main bathroom. I appreciated the excellent lighting and double mirrors, the Green Natura bath products, as well as the lovely cheese plate and crackers which greeted me on arrival. Had I not been out enjoying everything Madison had to offer, it would have been great to work at the large desk with convenient outlets while enjoying the lake air from windows that open, or to relax in the easy chair watching the 47” HD TV. A rarity in hotels — there were no annoying lights from the smoke alarm, wifi router, TV, or anything else which necessitate an eye mask.
There’s an incredible waterpark just outside San Antonio, Texas. It’s called Schlitterbahn Waterpark and it’s been voted the world’s best waterpark 19 years in a row. Staying at one of the hotels associated with the waterpark means you’re close to the action and get extra benefits, including early access to the very popular park.
There’s a variety of accommodation options at Schlitterbahn. For example, large groups will like the Treehaus Luxury Suites, and those who like their luxury a touch rustic will enjoy the wooden Riverbend cabins, both in the Blastenhoff section of the park. There are condos near the Surfenburg section and the Resort at the Bahn is the highlight of the original section. I stayed in the SchlitterStein Lofts, across the green Comal River from the noise and action of the resort. Ideal if I’d wanted a day to sleep in … but the waterpark was too much fun to keep away from.
The SchlitterStein Lofts sleep four to six people in a spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-balcony apartment. Each bedroom has a queen bed and the living room couch folds out into two twin beds. The master bedroom has a massive jetted bathtub too.
Bausch kitchen appliances mean you can make your own meals using ingredients from the nearby farmers’ market or grocery store and dine at the table for six. A washer and dryer, also by Bausch, mean laundry is easy.
While the lofts are a lovely place for relaxing, you’ll want to spend as much time as possible at the waterpark. The park features uphill water coasters (roller coasters you ride on a two-person tube propelled uphill by powerful jets of water), more traditional water slides, several varieties of lazy rivers to float along (some with adrenaline-bursting rapids, turns and falls), wave pools, playgrounds, a bungee freefall Skycoaster, and a special pool with a constant wave which is ideal for boogie boarding and bodysurfing.
Luxury extras worth the price: A cabana rental will ensure that you and your family have a shaded place just for you, complete with couches, a mini-fridge, and table service. A Blast Pass will allow you to reserve a time to ride the best attractions while skipping the long lines.
There are three other Schlitterbahn parks in Texas and one in Kansas City, Kansas. They’re all family-owned and, especially at the original New Braunfels location, you’ll feel a sense of nostalgia for the way family holidays used to be. No matter which location you choose, you’ll be impressed with the welcoming friendly attitude of the staff.
The owners of the Gelso Bianco Country Resort (opened in 2016) have been super smart. One brother of this family run business is the talented chef, the other the hotel manager. They have achieved what most other establishments fail to; the hotel appeals to everyone. Young people without alienating families with kids; the higher end market while still attracting a ‘cool’ crowd; and couples looking for a luxury retreat and locals looking for a nice dinner out.
Set in the countryside in the Province of Modena, in summer this 3 bedroomed boutique hotel has a beach club vibe. A DJ mixes chill out tunes a few evenings a week and local sun worshippers fill the gardens. At a subtle distance down a grassy slope, with charmingly rustic views over fields, hills and distant spires, is the baby pool and play zone. It’s perfect for keeping an eye on younger children away from the main pool, without losing out on atmosphere. There’s plenty of shade, the bar is open all day; no wonder Italians and visitors alike love this place.
The two dining options each have a distinct identity. There’s the casual wood fired pizza bistro (next to the tennis courts and beach volleyball court) and spacious terrace bar. By the pool is the high end restaurant, with beautifully presented, delicious dishes enjoyed while watching the spectacular sunsets.
The bedrooms are light and airy with a wall of windows and pine beams. The luxurious king size bed was perfectly positioned for lazy gazing across the view. The bath in our room was ridiculously large (travelling with young children it turned out to be generous enough to fit all 4 of us) with ‘colour therapy’ lighting. As a guest you are treated to welcome extras such as priority parking and a reserved double bed lounger in a prime pool side slot.
In winter, the hotel has a lower key vibe. The spa opens for guests (included in the room price). The dimly lit indoor heated pool includes soothing colour and bubble therapy – imagine drifting in a giant flotation tank while looking up at an ever changing coloured night sky. There’s also a sauna and steam room. The pizza restaurant closes and the focus is on the Mora Bistro, with quality menus and wines. Surprisingly, despite the varied attractions throughout the year , the hotel and restaurants are both very affordable.
For regional attractions there’s Modena, the Ferrari museum, balsamica vinegar tours, the art, history, beauty and food of Bologna, and the medieval towns of Vignola and Savignano.
Walk into a villa at Anantara Mai Khao and you walk into a luxurious refuge from which you may never want to emerge. Accommodation at Mai Khao resort consists entirely of pool villas and we had the pleasure of staying in a expansive sala pool villa which is quite simply one of the most beautiful hotel accommodations we have ever experienced.
The dark wood floors of the room contrast with the white linens and muslin drapes dressing the supremely comfortable king bed and the tastefully off-white walls. Directly opposite the bed are patio doors which open that entire wall up to the pool, creating an airy indoor/outdoor living space. The spectacular bathroom also opens up onto the outdoor area and includes a sunken, glass-sided bath which sits within the swimming pool.
The villa is surrounded by a slated wooden fence and not overlooked, affording complete privacy as you swim in the blue mosaic-tiled pool, take an outdoor shower, or laze on the huge day bed or sun loungers with a drink from the poolside minibar.
Villas are dotted around a serene lagoon where incredibly green tropical vegetation and water lilies abound, and the resort itself sits on Mai Khao beach, one of the more unspoilt and stunning beaches on the entire island. Golf buggies are on call to ferry you around the resort and there are lots of bicycle stations if you prefer pedal power although the resort is not so large that you can’t easily walk from one end to another.
Dining options include the culinary delights at the beachside Sea.Fire.Salt restaurant which specialises in freshly-caught seafood. La Sala restaurant in the heart of the resort serves a buffet-style breakfast before changing to a flavour-packed Thai menu throughout the day and evening.
Whether you choose to cocoon yourself in your villa for most of your stay (and you will be tempted to do so!) or enjoy the resort’s varied activities including a cooking school; muay Thai lessons; an infinity edged beachside pool; a trip to Phuket old town in the hotel limo; or a few spa treatments at the renowned Anantara Spa, one thing is for sure: you will be dreaming of your next visit to Anantara Mai Khao as soon as you depart its magical realm.
