I love elephants. The intelligence in their eyes is incredible. I’ve read about elephants’ mourning behaviours when one of their herd dies — they seem more human than humans. I can’t believe how gently and quietly they can walk with their huge bulk. On my African safari, I need to see elephants.

Anyone who has been to the big French Alpine ski destinations will be familiar with the annoyingly jacked-up food and drinks prices, the high-end shops you would never venture into and the Disneyesque hollowness of the resorts.

However, there are lesser known places where you can enjoy the same stunning views, awesome slopes, and delicious local fare without the pretension. Koh Phangan (or Pha Ngan) is known to tourists and travellers worldwide for its Full Moon Parties, attracting up to 30,000 every full moon evening for a riotous experience that climaxes with dancing as the sun rises.
